Priyanka Goswami's illusive silver in the women's 10,000m race walk on Saturday gave India its 27th medal of the 2022 Commonwealth Games. In addition to Murali Sreeshankar (silver in long jump) and Tejaswin Shankar (bronze in high jump), Priyanka set a personal record by finishing the marathon in 49 minutes and 38 seconds. She is now India's third track and field medalist at CWG 2022.
At the first sound of the whistle, Priyanka took the lead fairly quickly and kept it to finish first after 4000 metres (4 km). She trailed Emily Wamusyi Ngii of Kenya and Jemima Montag of Australia with six to go. Priyanka had dropped to third after 8 kilometres, but a last-ditch effort with 2 kilometres left allowed the 26-year-old to retake the lead. While Priyanka finished in second place and overtook Ngii, Montag won the race in 42:38. The other competitor from India, Bhawna Jat, came in eighth.
As a result, Priyanka became the first Indian woman to take home a medal in racewalking. She is now only the second racewalker to receive a medal at the CWG. Prior to her, Harminder Singh won a bronze medal in the 20-meter racewalk during the 2019 Games. Priyanka had competed for India in the Tokyo Olympics 2022 the previous year, placing 17th. Earlier in 2021, she had won the Indian Racewalking Championship, winning the 20 km event in 1:28.45, breaking the previous Indian record.
