Before Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the renovated Central Vista Avenue, officials announced on Monday that the Union government intends to rename Rajpath and the walkway across the India Gate gardens as Kartavya Path.
On September 7, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will hold a special meeting to discuss the request to rename the famous section Kartavya Path. "A meeting is being convened to debate the name change even though the proposal has not yet arrived. The meeting would include participation from all members and concerned officials, according to Satish Upadhyay, vice-chairman of the NDMC and a former leader of the BJP in Delhi.
According to two officials from the ministry of housing and urban affairs, the road and the space from the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose statue at India Gate C-Hexagon to the Rashtrapati Bhavan would be referred to as Kartavya Path. On September 8, Prime Minister Modi will unveil the statue and open the renovated Central Vista Avenue.
Kingsway was the name of Rajpath during British rule. The walkway was built as a commemorative boulevard and was modelled after London's Kingsway. Major state events like the Republic Day Parade and the Beating Retreat ceremonial are held on Key Avenue.
