The persistent presence of more than 1 million Rohingya refugees in overcrowded camps in Bangladesh has become a severe security and stability worry, according to Bangladesh's prime minister on Monday.

At the beginning of a three-day gathering of military officials from 24 nations in the Indo-Pacific region, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, "Apart from their own suffering, their prolonged presence is causing a serious impact on the economy, environment, security, and sociopolitical stability of Bangladesh."

The Indo-Pacific Armies Management Seminar is being co-hosted by the Bangladeshi army and the United States.

While the armies of the participating nations address transnational crime, security concerns, disaster management, and women's empowerment, Bangladesh uses the forum to draw attention to the plight of Rohingya refugees who have fled persecution in Myanmar.
