An official stated on Monday that 34,000 homes in Victoria state might be either isolated or submerged as the southeast of Australia continues to experience flooding.

With some communities having the highest river peaks in decades, Victoria is the state that has been most severely hit. In a crisis that started last week, flooding was also happening in the states of New South Wales and Tasmania.

Murray Watt, the minister of federal emergency management, warned of "very significant floods" in Victoria as further rain is expected later this week.

As many river systems combine, it's likely that a flood peak will occur, the waters will recede, and then there will be another peak, Watt told Australian Broadcasting Corp.
