Sanjay Malhotra, a Rajasthan-trained Indian Administrative Service officer from the 1990 batch, was appointed by the government on Wednesday as an officer on special duty (OSD) in the revenue department. According to a formal order, he will take over as revenue secretary on November 30 when incumbent Tarun Bajaj retires.
As the top bureaucrat of the revenue department, one of the crucial divisions of the Union finance ministry, Malhotra, an IIT Kanpur alumnus, would be in charge of putting the finishing touches on all tax-related issues pertaining to the upcoming Union Budget for 2023–24. On February 1st, 2023, the budget is predicted to be announced.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet made the choice along with more than a dozen other high-profile bureaucratic reshuffles. The Prime Minister and the Home Minister make up the ACC. Malhotra would be in charge of increasing tax revenues without going overboard at a time when the world economy is struggling and India is dealing with an increasing weight of food, fuel, and fertiliser subsidies.
