In the Philippines, 98 people were reported dead as a result of landslides and flooding brought on by typhoon Nalgae, which struck the nation over the weekend.

The National Disaster Risk and Management Council announced on Monday that the death toll had increased from the 48 reported on Sunday. 69 persons were hurt, and another 63 were reported missing.

The recommendation to declare a national state of calamity for a year, which would result in a price freeze and the release of emergency funds, is being considered by President Ferdinand Marcos.

About 590,000 families were impacted by the storm, known locally as Paeng, as it made landfall on the three major island groupings of Mindanao, Visayas, and Luzon. According to the most recent report from the government weather agency, Nalgae is expected to leave the Philippines today afternoon or evening.
