Imran Khan, a former prime minister of Pakistan, was hurt on Thursday when a shooter opened fire on his car while he was leading a protest against the ruling party, adding to the political unrest in the nation.

The event happened in Wazirabad, in the Punjab province of Pakistan, about 100 km from Lahore, as Khan, 70, travelled there with his followers to put pressure on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's administration to hold early elections. Khan and other PTI party leaders could be seen standing on the vehicle's roof as a barrage of shots appeared to be fired from an automatic weapon.

Khan was injured in the right leg, according to PTI leaders, but he was not in danger. According to reports, Khan was treated at Shaukat Khanum Hospital in Lahore. After being shot, Khan was seen on television waving to his fans before being transported to his armoured truck.

In addition to party officials Ahmed Chattha and Faisal Javed, 13 other people were hurt in the attack, including a PTI employee who was killed. After a PTI fan wrestled with the suspect, who was carrying a pistol, he was taken into custody there at the scene of the incident.
