From April 1, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will raise the cost of renewing registration certificates for vehicles older than 15 years. According to an order issued by the MoRTH, the new prices are up to eight times higher than the current prices and will be effective across India beginning in April 2022. This ruling, however, will not apply in Delhi, where all petrol and diesel-powered vehicles older than 15 and 10 years, respectively, are not eligible for re-registration.

According to the ruling, starting April 1, renewing a 15-year-old car will cost Rs 5,000, up from the current rate of Rs 600, while two-wheelers will cost Rs 1,000, up from Rs 300. The cost of imported cars will be Rs 40,000 rather than Rs 15,000. As seen in the pricing, the government is raising the price of four-wheelers by more than eight times the current price.

In the instance of Delhi, the government has given vehicle owners the option of converting their 10 year old diesel/ 15 year old petrol vehicles to electric if they choose to drive in the NCT of Delhi. Retrofitting such vehicles with empanelled electric kits, on the other hand, will have to be done through agencies certified by the Transportation Department. The Department of Transportation has identified six manufacturers from which you can convert your old petrol and diesel automobiles that can't drive on city roads into electric vehicles.
