Opposition parties staged a walkout in the Lok Sabha today to protest the hike in fuel and cooking gas costs and demand a rollback.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a Congress leader, raised the matter after Question Hour, alleging that the opposition parties had claimed that diesel and gasoline prices will rise after the election.

Members of the Congress, Trinamool Congress, NCP, DMK, and Left parties chanted slogans against the petrol price hike and urged a rollback from their seats.

The opposition parties attempted to raise the issue as soon as the Lok Sabha convened for Question Hour, but Speaker Om Birla refused.

Speaker Om Birla had instructed the opposition parties that they might bring up the issue following Question Period.

Petrol and diesel prices were raised by 80 paise per litre on Tuesday, while domestic cooking gas rates were raised by 50 per cylinder, ending a four-and-a-half month rate hike due to the election.
