The case of eight persons who were burned alive in West Bengal's Birbhum has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation. After denying the Mamata Banerjee government's request to not hand over the probe to the CBI, the Calcutta High Court referred the case to the CBI.

A crowd thrashed and burned alive eight persons on Tuesday, all of them were women and children.

The matter will now be handed over to the CBI by a Special Investigation Team created by the Bengal government. The CBI has been ordered to file a progress report by April 7 by a division bench of the Calcutta High Court, consisting of Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Justice R Bharadwaj.

The Central Forensic Science Laboratory is gathering samples and evidence at the crime scene.

If the suspects do not surrender, Ms Banerjee has stated that they will be tracked down. The Chief Minister, who is facing a furious political reaction over the heinous killings and has been accused by the opposition BJP of tolerating political violence, further claimed that "something major" was behind the atrocity.

The Chief Minister has stated that she is concerned about her opponents politicising the issue. Ms. Banerjee and the BJP-led centre have been fighting on multiple fronts for a long time, and the recent event may simply open up a new one.

A mob trapped six women and two children in their homes and burned them alive on Tuesday in Bogtui, near Rampurhat town, in vengeance for the death of a local Trinamool Congress politician, Bhadu Sheikh, in a crude bomb assault. A day later, charred bodies were discovered, largely belonging to one family.
