On Friday, an enraged crowd in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, set fire to two homes belonging to the family of a guy who went missing together with a 22-year-old lady in an interfaith relationship.
The house of Sajid, a gym owner in Agra's Runakta neighbourhood, was set on fire by members of the fringe group "Dharam Jagran Samanvay Sangh," according to police. A nearby residence belonging to the family was also set ablaze.
The mob demanded that the man accused of kidnapping the woman be arrested. Due to the mob's demands, shops in the nearby market were forced to close on Friday.
The attack on the gym owner's residence did not result in any injuries.
After the event, the police post in-charge was suspended for negligence, and the Sikandra station house officer was subjected to an investigation. "If he is proven guilty, action would be done against him as well," Sudheer Kumar Singh, Agra's Senior Superintendent of Police, told reporters.
On Monday, the woman vanished. The cops tracked her down two days later, but Sajid's whereabouts are still unknown. A missing person's report was made by her relatives, starting a police search for the couple.
The woman said in a video that went viral that she is an adult who went along with the man willingly.
Senior Superintendent of Police Sudheer Singh acknowledged to reporters, "Both are adults." He stated that the woman would be taken to court by the police. Because of the festival holidays this week, this couldn't be done yet.
He claimed that members of the group that set the houses on fire had filed a FIR or police report, and that they will be apprehended soon.
A police report has been filed against the gym owner by the woman's relatives.
