Dr Anand Rai, a whistleblower in the Vyapam Scam, was arrested in a Delhi hotel on Thursday by the Madhya Pradesh Police Crime Branch in connection with an alleged fraud case.

Soon after his detention, Dr Rai took to Twitter to invite "workers and well-wishers" to come to Bhopal. In the tweet, he mentioned prominent Congress politicians Kapil Sibal and Vivek Tankha.

The Madhya Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test (MP-TET) paper leak was recently 'discovered' by Dr Rai.

His detention came a day after the Madhya Pradesh High Court dismissed his plea for the quashing of a FIR filed against him by Laxman Singh Markam, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's Officer on Special Duty (OSD).

Mr Markan filed a police complaint on March 27 against state Congress chief spokesman KK Mishra and Dr Anand Rai, stating that they created images of his phone and circulated them on social media to accuse him of being involved in the P-TET exam paper leak.

The hospital officials have also suspended Dr Rai, who was working as a Medical Officer at Indore's Hukumchand Hospital, with immediate effect for "dereliction of duty and inordinate absence from work."

Dr Rai's challenge against the Madhya Pradesh High Court ruling dismissing his plea for quashing of the FIR and vacating interim relief granted to him was filed today in the Supreme Court by Vivek Tankha, who is also his counsel in the matter.

On April 11, a bench led by Chief Justice NV Ramana consented to hear it.

He further told the Court that the Madhya Pradesh police had given Dr Rai notice to attend and join the inquiry today, but that he was arrested last night in Delhi, days after filing a petition in the Supreme Court.

The Vyapam scam was discovered in 2011. Following a top court decision in 2015, the CBI took over the investigation into the massive recruitment and admissions scandal.
